day 5

Day 5, I think I'm almost done with the detox stage, now it's time to learn how to live sober. I'm very glad I saw a doctor and did this with his help.

I know there are people who don't have insurance (50 million Americans) but don't let that stop you from seeing a doctor/psychiatrist. You can see a doctor, get medication so that you don't have a life threatening detox for under 200 dollars. DO NOT do this cold turkey! Think about the money you spent on booze, it could go to a good cause like getting sober.

Life is strange now, but waking up even with little sleep is better than waking up hungover. I now understand that this will be a daily fight for the rest of my life staying sober, and my challenge will be how to have fun sober. I know it can be done, but like all the people who have time at the meetings, they ALL say it gets better.

My problem is I live a little south of San Francisco, Im an avid surfer and we all chill in a group, parties all the time etc. I got a few buddies who I can be honest with, and a couple that know what I'm going through.

The sad thing is, over half of them need help too. Surfers burn calories like crazy, so we don't see the weight gain or many beer bellies in the water, BUT you can't see a liver or a pancreas either.

One day at a time.

Congrats on your 5th day and making the decision to change your life. I'm from the bay also and I used to be hard core into the rave seen. Dancing and sweating all night would burn the calories off. So I can relate to the whole "not having the pinch". But when you wake up the next day and your liver and kidneys are killing you from being over worked it starts to tell you something. That's cool that you got some close buds that you can be honest with. I learned who my real friends were when I made the decision to stop drinking. The ones that respected my choice and support me are still in my life. The rest of them were SNUP's (Serve No Useful Purpose) so they are no longer in my life. Good luck on your journey bro, you can do it, you have the right mindset so you've got a good start already. Lastly HOW ABOUT THEM GIANTS.

Happily for us all there need be no daily fight to stay sober. Maybe it sounds like BS right now but the truth is that aa's twelve steps really does do what it says on the tin. All you need is open mindedness, willingness and honesty. Life is far more fullfilling and satisfying when we done ignore our spiritual needs. Mental, physical AND spiritual health is the way forward to happy sobriety. What will it cost to try?

You'll start helping people before you even know it. Sometimes just talking to another alcoholic in itself is enough to help. When you get called on to share at a meeting can be helping someone else out. There is always going to be someone out there that has a similar story as yours. Telling your story and that person seeing the similarities can really help someone out. I don't know how many times I've thanked someone for their share, they delivered the message that I needed to hear that day. The same has happened to me, of course not as often. But it is a very fulfilling feeling you get inside when you learn that you helped someone, just by telling your story. It's not as if it was intended, but it happens. I guess thats why they say not to leave until the miracle happens. I've even said things to my sponsor that he has thanked me for, saying that I dropped knowledge on him. And that guy is hundreds of times wiser than me. I've been called a wise a$$, but it was never anything to do with wisdom...lol.
