| No Wrong Way..
My (Late) Sponsor Told Me Before he Passed Away.. "There is No Wrong Way To Stay Sober" He was a Big Book Thumper Too! (but not a know it all) He Helped a Lot of people Before he Died.. i Think the thing that impressed me Most about Him was his Open Mindedness.. There are Many Ways to Get and Stay Sober! (thank God!)

One of my favourite sayings relevant to recovery is 'different strokes for different folks' - its hard for some people to grasp the fact that their way of recovery cant work for everyone... we're all different

Well i was sober and my wife was still close to leaving. She would suggest that maybe there is a wrong way.........she would suggest that sobriety alone dont change the mind or the person. Much of my "list" was committed while sober and insane........wrong?.... For me the wrong way was expecting life to light up without a drink. and continued to cause harm and destruction. I suppose you could play around with the word "wrong"....... did i get it wrong when i wanted to put a gun to my head and i hadnt had a drink for a good while.....wrong way?........or just blind to the truth. A note to anyone that reads this.......who is sober and suffering. try the 12 steps of alcoholics anonymous..........if you are an alcoholic of my type, i believe you will find the answer to your dilemma. just me. |

OK...maybe the question is better phrased as 'no wrong way to be in recovery?' ![]() Now, anybody who wants to argue what 'recovery' is, form a orderly queue... LOL I see happy clean and sober people here @ SR living full lives. That's the important bit for me. D

There are plenty of wrong ways to get/stay sober. Go to any treatment center in this Country and ask the patients.

It is good to know the even tho I share a great many of the same symptoms of addiction (inability to stop at certain times, increased tolerance, compulsion to use, withdraws, etc,) that other people suffer with. Yet there are many different ways to recover from an illness that would have me locked up in prison or dead without effective treatment.

Hmm but then again you could be in complete denial and i don't suppose an insane person would recognise they were insane anyway...probably best to do them anyway

Anyway that keeps you sober & sane is good in my books. I got sober in AA but today I use Zen Buddhism and humanism. I think the 12 steps are a great way to get sober but my mind isn't so closed that I think it is the only way. Your sponsor was a wise person! |

IMO if someone continues to suffer as the result of not-drinkin, then they still suffer from alcoholism. Which is not what true recovery is designed to do. Old Buddhist saying: "In this life pain is mandatory, suffering is optional".

I agree that to be in recovery, which for this purpose I will define as sober and happy about it, you do need to change. The thing is, there are a million ways to bring about change and 12 steps is just one of those ways.

Great Idea for a thread 24hrsaday, shame the usual ignorance had to rear its ugly head....

Is it POSSIBLE to have a thread that does NOT turn into "AA strictly 12 steps is the ONLY way" versus the rest of the forum that does NOT use AA? it's been pointed out several times in several ways that AA is just an option, this is NOT an AA dedicated forum. how about some respect for the rest of us that are perfectly HAPPY and SOBER without the structure of AA??? please? thank you.

Fandy, for some people it IS the only way. For other people it isn't. I have no interest in persuading someone happily recovering without AA to try it. For someone who hasn't tried it (steps and all) and is having difficulty, I think it's worth considering.

Fandy, stick around this makes a nice change for AA not to labelled a load of crap by people that have never even been to a meeeting let alone know what recovery is...for my part if its working for you doing it a different way i couldn't be more happy, proud and encouraging of your progress |

I'm sorry, wrong choice of words using "forum"....I meant thread. i stepped away from the conversation to feed my cats and dog and cook some pasta. it's 7PM here. I am respectful of people who need and prefer the AA method..however many do not and I hear so much quacking that you can't "really recover or have a spiritual awakening" without AA...THIS is simply their OPINION not fact. I hope you all have a great sober holiday weekend and are happy too.
