IV therapy?

No, I didn't try anything specific... maybe some sugar.

Nope, sorry.

Outside of the couple of days that the body physically craves alcohol after you quit, cravings are THOUGHTS.

I had to work on my mind to remedy that, not my biochemistry.

Based on your earlier posts....I'm rather surpized
you are now having cravings for alcohol.
Please do check with your doctor.

I was having terrible cravings and started taking tryptophan. Without doubt it worked. I have found that cravings can be physical, as a candy bar or piece of cake can alleviate a strong urge to drink, but probably hurts in the long run.

Here is what I did about crravings.....

In early sobriety I timed my cravings.
They were 5 to 7 minutes in duration.

I took action....drank cold watter ...brushed my teeth
went for a walk...danced around the room...ate Lifesavers

I also walked daily to an AA meeting
Followed an eating plan for hypoglycemia
Took a daily multi-vitamin + B Complex

Rather quickly....my cravings lessened in frequency and severity
by the end of 2 months...they had vanished.

5-HTP, B vitamins, a multivitamin, exercise and a good diet all help to quell cravings. Get the best rest possible, read, meditate. The worst thing you can do is eat simple sugars. In spite of what folks say about relieving a craving it does so like a drink would, only to come back on you in even stronger cravings.

I still take Amino acids, and vitaminB. I bought a book called 7 weeks to sobriety. It was written by a woman whose son committed suicide. He seemed fine the evening before, the next morning ,they found him in the garage with the car running. It's a long story, but she thought he must have had bad mood swings. She blames hypoglycemia, and vitamin deffiency.

She did a LOT of research on it, and opened a rehab clinic. Thier success rate is pretty high The book explains vitamins and amino acids and how they help with anxiety and other things that make us drink. (Yes Smacked <G> Thoughts)
I will be taking glutamine, Ester c vitamin B, amongst a few others for a long time. This is the longest I have been sober, and it has been easy for the most part. You can get the book 7 weeks to sobriety on amazon for a couple dollars + shipping. I can't prove it helps, but I am sober. The bad news is I spent about 100 bucks on over the counter vitamins and amino acids, and spent a good part of the day looking for them.

Huh, I am really confused. I don't understand how someone can draw a conclusion that I am having cravings. I was just asking a question if anyone has ever tried amino acids. I do not have any cravings what-so-ever.

Nevertheless,
That is great you are having success with the supplements. I have heard of that book also. There are quite a few books out there that deal with supplements being an effective way to treat addiction. I really like the book "End your addiction now", of course it is written by a MD, PHD and NMD. It seems that most alternative/complementary practices are MD's with a PHD and NMD degrees with decades of experience in the addiction field.

God Bless

I'm even more confused, why would you post about cravings and supplements when you aren't having any or intending to use any?

I think it's self evident with the second sentence in the post: "Just curious."

I have read that book " End Your Addiction Now". I too was wondering if anyone had some real life experiance with it. Drugs and alcholol stop the neurotransmitters in the brain from producing serotonin, endorphins ect. taking nutrients, replace what's missing and help the neurotransmitters start working on thier own. It makes a lot of sense. I have spoken to my AS about giving it a try. What does he have to lose by taking all natural vitamins minerals and supplements ? His cravings for drugs ??? According to the Author he has a 5 out of 6 success rate.

I tried everything at one point. Ended up using L-Glutamine. Tried recovery with and without and for me it definitely reduced cravings. Stopped using it after a year or so. No cravings since.

Welcome Brook10

My own personal experience suggests that alcoholism/addiction is more complicated than simple nutrition - I had many other factors involved as well - but I have no experience with the therapy so I can't disprove it.

If your son decides to give it a go, I hope he finds success
