| able to stop/not able to stop
I have been reading a lot about people who recognize (or are) alcoholics because once they begin drinking they can't stop. what about if i CAN stop, it's just that i don't bother to until my head is spinning, etc. that's just one symptom, anyhow. i do some serious jonesing for a drink now that i'm trying not to drink. sometimes i wish i hadn't had that talk with my husband telling him i think i might have a drinking problem and could he help me not drink. he congratulates me if i tell him i beat a temptation, and the one time in the past 8 days that i bought wine, he took it away and returned it to the store . . . BUT he drinks his beer in front of me (makes me jealous for wine). found an AA meeting nearby -- meets on Tuesday night. always thought whether or not i was an alcoholic would be obvious. guess i didn't understand all the details when my parents told me there was alcoholism in the family. |

It is not obvious to an alcoholic that they have a problem. That is one of the many aspects of the condition. If you have asked your family to help, and you are on this forum writing posts, and you also are looking for AA meetings, then you almost certainly have a drinking problem. While you are drinking it can be very subtle as to if you do or do not have a drinking problem. But, look at the facts that I listed above and you may have the answer. I used to ask my wife to help me in my drinking, then when she would get rid of alcohol, or hide my wallet so that I couldn't run to the store I would get so pissed. She was just doing what I asked her to do. Keep reading, and be open minded regarding AA. I wish I had started AA years ago. I certainly could have used it. AA isn't perfect but my home group of friends helps me stay sober and that is why I keep showing up! Thanks for posting. |

Hi again..... ![]() Alcohol is a toxic liquid and will do damage to your mind and body. That's true for everyone....not just alcoholics. You need to take care of your health and well being. Please do quit for a better future.
