I recommend Raymond Carvers short stories. He quietly, powerfully, and with amazing precision describes active alcaholisim. He does not do it in every story, but it is definitley there in many. His skills as a writer say what is often quite hard to explain.

The Scratch.

I woke up with a spot of blood
over my eye. A scratch
halfway across my forehead.
But I'm sleeping alone these days.
