Set aside prayer.

God please set aside everything I know, for an open mind and a new experience with you

My sponsor kept me in this prayer all through the time we went through the work..The more I began to sit with this prayer I began applying it into every area of my life and my senses began to open and I began to awaken to the present breath and moment..Just like now after a period of meditation..

It's a powerful prayer..To let God take you further and further for an open mind and a new and deeper experience...

Hey Ed--Do you think having an open mind includes having tolerance and compassion and allowing others to find their own way in life and sobriety?

Thanks for the reminder. Here is the version my Sponsor passed on to me.

Dear God, please help me set aside everything
I think I know about You, about me, about my fellow man;
about the Twelve Steps & Twelve Traditions,
and please allow me to gain a fresh new vision,
perspective and understanding of what You, what me,
what my fellow man
and
The Twelve Steps & Twelve Traditions
are all about.
AMEN

My prayer goes like this:
"God, I offer myself to Thee -- to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties, that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always!"

I use that one two. My home group says the third step prayer to close our meetings. My favorite always is:
God--Grant me the Serenity
To Accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And the Wisdom to know the difference.

R*U*N* Confused Anonymous?

The "set-aside" prayer is in CA (Cocaine Anonymous) literature.

While CA is a great organization, there are areas where it has become a definite cult (such as the area I live now). The "members" are often over-zealous and demonstratively fixated on the perfection they claim. They are required to go through an indoctrination by "approved sponsors" and only associate with those that have been indoctrinated.
Unfortunately in our area it is dominated by meth and heroin addicts that tried coke drank sometimes and resent AA members.

When I go to those meetings, I see many cocaine/crack - users/addicts that leave and never come back.

It's a good prayer often twisted to fit the absurd zealots demanding control and domination over others.

We have seen this attempt lately in many posts/threads.

Time to set this personality aside.

Make no mistake Ed,
you are a newcomer that would do more to help yourself by listening than pontificating these tenets.

For some, detox takes five years.
For all of us, integration takes a lifetime.
Keep coming back!

Be Well!

The meetings here either close with the Serenity Prayer or the Lords Prayer. The Serenity Prayer I'll say with the omission of the first word, the Lords Prayer, I opt out.

Hey DK--Good for you. Make it work however you can! My homegroup used to close with the Lord's Prayer, but we switched to the 3rd step prayer because many of the people attending the meetings found the Lord's Prayer too "church-y", myself included. The wording of the 3rd step prayer even bothers me a bit, but I like the idea of it. I prefer not to call my higher power "God" because the God of my understanding seems to have very little in common with the most well-known conception of God.

Hi Lulu,

I like the word "Dog" better! And if I could learn to be as happy and content as my puppy (14 going on 15), I'd be in mighty fine shape! Thanks for your reply!
