Pain Debate

I'm in alot of pain from the dental work. I am debating about stopping and get the pain medication that I turned down. I've been taking 2x200mg of Advil. At first it worked but, not now. I was going to take extra Advil but, I've been trying to take medication as directed. Maybe I'll check the drug store for something stronger. I am at the VA Hospital and didn't completly share my plan with the others. I decided to post to get this off my chest. The main problem was they had to scrape some bone. Just talking to you guys has helped me decide to do what I know you going to suggest. I'm going back up and see my counselor and have him help me. I'll check in later at work. Don W

I have no experience with real physical pain in sobriety yet Don.
But I would imagine being in agony isn't a requirement.
I've known countless addicts, pill poppers no less, who've managed to get through the pain with a prescription, following doctor's orders, and above all, reaching out to their support circles.
Putting people who know you in the loop on this really is the only thing you should do, I think.
I imagine you can be at peace with this, while getting relief from the pain.

Wish I could see your smile Don.

I really think this is a personal decision. What anyone else does is none of my business.

I know AA memvers who pick up a white chip after using pain meds. And I know some who did not.

I have taken pain meds after surgery. And I did not consider it a break in my sobriety.

If I was using drugs recreationally...then it is a different matter.

Don:
I still take Ultram for my back, I like it b/c it doesn't affect my state of being. That being said, if I had to take Percocet, as long as I'm taking as prescribed, and for the right reasons, I'm OK. I've just got to be careful with my motives...

Hope you feel better soon!

Ken

I ended up talking to the dentist after my sponsor and VA counselor. The dentist told me while the pain is severe take 4 of the 200 mg Advil. Then as the pain becomes less cut back until not needed. Both my sponsor and counselor prefered I didn't take the Pain Killers. They mentioned that if it was going to be long term fine but, this should be over in a few more days. I took the Advil as prescribed and it is working. Thanks for your suggestions. Don W
