| New to AA - guidance from experienced A's needed
I finally got off the "friends and family of alcoholics" because I had a revelation while sitting in my first AA meeting after four years of not attending. "Why have I married two alcoholics???" "What's wrong with me that I keep glomming onto A's?" Gee - I'm an alcoholic!! Well, duh!! I'm getting the focus on my responsiblity for this mess and reading lots of literature. Problem: my H is a VERY active A and there's booze all over the house. I can't do anything about his problem, but it's challenging for me to say "no thanks" when he offers me a drink. Since I've just started back in the program and am taking it VERY seriously, I want to get a sponsor soon, but in the meantime any guidance would be appreciated. Yes, I'm giving my anxiety over how to handle this problem over to my Higher Power, but I'm new at this so I'm struggling. I also believe my Higher Power will send people my way who will impart their knowledge and wisdom to me in order to help me through this ordeal. Thanks! |

Welcome ! Its great that you have recognized your own alcoholism . It must be very tough to live with someone who is active . I lived with my sister who was active in her addiction to pills for a while , and for some reason found a way not to pick up . I stayed ( and still do ) very close to my aa program and used my sponser alot I also wanted to stay clean with all my heart , when tempted I play the tape all the way thru to the end , the hangovers the remorse and guilt . I also used some things I learned in the ala-non forum here , self care being very important , my recovery comes first , without that I have nothing .Good luck to you and bless...Trish :rose

For right now I'd suggest keeping your nose in those books and, if you have them yet, keep those phone numbers close! If you don't have any phone numbers, get some pronto at a f2f! If you don't have it yet, get the book "Living Sober" from AA. Also get the book Under the Influence (by James Robert Milam and Katherine Ketcham).... if anything will keep you turned away from booze, that book'll do it! Good for you for recognizing that you're an alcoholic before the disease took you down farther. Wherever you are now, you know it'll take you down farther. Another good for you for your HP! And yet another for going to an AA meeting! Now, get that sponsor. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't sever ties with Friends and Family. You have definitely earned a seat!
