When I was in grade school we were taught that if caught on fire, we should stop, drop, and roll. This instruction was seemingly given enough times that should we be faced with the situation, we will do this without second thought. Or any thought at all. A simple and highly effective method for preventing death.

To me, this is what a mantra provides in the midst of an attack of obsessive, addictive thinking. As soon as that fire is lit, I need to refocus my thoughts on this predefined mantra (or prayer if you prefer). Mine happens to be "God help me. God give me the strength. God give me the willingness". I say this over and over again until the flames are out. A simple and highly effective method for preventing death.

I think this is one of the most powerful things about AA. There is a short, effective sentence to help in just about every situation. At first, I found it annoying, but they are the things that save us.

I say, "Thy Will," a lot, and it never fails to calm me immediately. I heard it in an AA meeting, and of course it is the basis of many AA prayers. I also repeat the Serenity Prayer a lot. In my first couple months, it was pretty much on a continuous loop in my head.

I've said at least a million prayers in my life. Now I try to focus on just 3 short and simple ones that serve kind of like mantra's;

1. Take this cup from me
2. How can I be helpful
3. I struggle. I surrender. The truth unfolds

I like those. I was told early on i really need to know only two prayers:

1. Please help.
2. Thank you.

"Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me."
