Nausea while being sober

I'm an alcoholic for one year now (drinking everyday - no liver problem at all). Is it normal to have nausea when the effects of alcohol go away? When I'm sober I'll eat just a bit, once a day, when I'm drunk I can eat a pizza alone.

I had a pretty bad problem a few months ago: Although I stopped drinking completely for a month, I needed 15 days to eat normally again, with normal appetite and without wanting to vomit everytime I eat.

I really don't want to stop drinking completely (maybe I'm not welcome in here for that), but what do you think about all these? You've certainly experienced that sort of problems.

When was your last drink?

sugarbear1 07-21-2013 05:36 PM

alcohol disrupts the normal digestive tract and the pH balance....when we don't drink, we start to feel the effects it's caused and it has to take time to get normal, which it can't, if we still drink.

see your doctor, please!

What's your poison? Beer, wine, straight whiskey, vodka?? How old are you?

Hyle 07-21-2013 07:17 PM

I'm 25 years old. The doctors cannot find any physical problem and I don't really want to quit drinking. I'm doing my best to control it. Drink occasionally. But I can't do that if I can't eat while I'm not drunk. I drink everything, but usually it's vodka.

Welcome Hyle!

Alcohol can definitely cause stomach and digestive problems, although only a doctor can really make an individual diagnosis. In any case, continuing to drink will only make your problems worse.

We understand how hard it is to imagine a life without drinking. Alcoholics try countless ways to cut down, take time off (like you did), changed what we're drinking...... anythingexcept to stop completely. That's what addiction does to us.

Glad you posted today - you're welcome here any time.:wavey:

I'm drunk right now (two bottles of vodka). The problem is that I don't want to feel bad while I'm sober, I want to feel like I used to. I think the problem is caused by the beers. Maybe it's a stomach problem, but I don't get it why it doesn't get worse since I continue drinking and it doesn't exist while I'm drunk.

Alcohol is poison. It's going to damage the body in many ways. I too was a vodka guzzler. Kidney, liver, stomach, head aches...sore all over. Our throats gets it too. As mentioned, we can't give out medical advice - you need to speak to a doctor. Be upfront and honest with your alcohol consumption - they can't treat something they don't know about or have the whole story. I didn't feel much while I was anaesthetized by alcohol either.

Please get it checked out.

Alcohol is very irritating to our GI tracts (and most other bodily systems). The problem does not go away when we drink, we are just intoxicated and don't notice.

Yes, nausea is common the day after drinking, it's called a hangover!! And thankfully I don't experience those anymore!!

There are many health problems alcohol can cause or aggrivate in the GI tract, bleeding ulcers, Barrett's esophagus, hiatal hernias, cirrhosis, hepatitis, and pancreatitis, to name a few!! Best to seek the advice of a medical professional, and give an honest accounting of your alcohol intake.

Wish you well. And if you ever want a solution to your alcohol problems, try visiting a local AA meeting!!

I found this to be very true. I did not think I had any health issues, most I figured was due to getting older but I found once I was sober that many problems I did have went away. So one, I never contributed them to drinking or two, I never noticed them because I was drinking.

Friday night into Saturday I felt bad. No clue why. I was a little nauseous and I was really tired. In the past I would have tried to drink it away. Now I decided to rest, eat something and take a nap, which I never do, and by Saturday night I felt better.

I would have never listened to my body four months ago. I would have just drank through it. I would not have wanted to waste precious drinking time taking a nap.

It got so bad for me that I couldn't go to work in the morning and eventually lost a great job. The doctors checked everything but I was never honest about my alcohol use.

I had all the tests required. Liver, kidneys, heart, stomach and lungs seem completely healthy. However I got nausea even ten days after I stop drinking. I can eat too much while being drunk, I can't eat anything without coughing and wanting to vomit while being sober. I thought it was a liver disease that's why I stopped drinking back then, but the doctor couldn't find a physical cause of the problem. I suppose it's just withdrawal symptoms and I either have to stop for months or drink more so I won't feel them.

This is a serious medical issue and should be addressed with qualified medical professionals. If the first doctor can find nothing, then consult another - try a specialist (e.g. Gastroenterologist) or one familiar with alcoholism.

Drinking more is definitely not the answer. Like jazzfish says, get a second opinion - and a 3rd, 4th, 5th one if necessary. If you can't eat when you're not drunk, you clearly do have health issues that need diagnosis and treatment. You don't have to keep on living your life in pain. Seek advice and treatment until you get it.

I suggest you google alcohol abuse. On nearly every single medical site, there's a list of physical ailments associated with alcohol.

Down that list, you will find a host of issues related to the gastrointestinal tract.

Good luck!

Hyle 07-22-2013 05:47 PM

For a few days now there is some nausea only when the effects of alcohol go away. I just cough after I eat, like I want to vomit. But it doesn't get worse for one week now.

Isaiah 07-23-2013 02:47 AM

I had similar problems myself. Though as many have said, damage to a lot of organs can or could be cause for nausea when eating, as they're almost all involved in some step of the process.

It could also be withdrawals too, which is up in the brain. That's what I suspect was my problem. I wasn't smart enough to go to a doctor though.

Hyle 07-24-2013 02:37 PM

I suppose I can't ask to tell me a way to avoid nausea when I'm sobber while I keep drinking, right?

Mark75 07-24-2013 03:09 PM

Yea, kinda hard to figure anything out while drinking up to two bottles of vodka at a time. Your problem is alcohol. Stop drinking it.

No problem with your asking, but yeah, nothing's going to help much as long as you keep creating the same problem. I hope you decide to stop drinking - if you think you can't, then get some help. You don't want to find out one day that you've caused permanent damage.
