Arrow Big Book Quote

"An alcoholic in his cups is an unlovely creature. Our struggles with them are variously strenuous, comic, and tragic. One poor chap committed suicide in my home. He could not, or would not see our way of life.
There is, however, a vast amount of fun about it all. I suppose some would be shocked at our seeming worldliness and levity. But just underneath there is deadly earnestness. Faith has to work twenty-four hours a day in and through us, or we perish."

At first, I was "shocked at the levity" from many of the recovered folks I saw in the AA rooms. I thought they'd been sneaking "nips" in the bathroom. How can anyone have so much enjoyment in their lives without alcohol? Thanks to the AA 12-Steps and the grace of an HP I now understand.

In sobriety I went out with 2 sober friends and 3 other 'normies'. We were sitting around hanging out and the topic of drinking came up so one of the alcoholics shared a story about how he got 3 DUI's in one night. Immediately, the other alkie and me started laughing, while all three 'normies' got this shocked look and one said 'omg why are you laughing? that's horrible!'.

I guess living through hell and surviving to see the other side gives me 'worldliness and levity', but the thought that that could again be my life is always near.

The same thing happens to me. I will share a story of one of my nights out and chuckle while others look at me aghast. They really don't get it.
