"Most of us think this awareness of a Power greater than ourselves is the essence of spiritual experience. Our more religious members call it "God-consciousness." Most emphatically we wish to say that any alcoholic capable of honestly facing his problems in the light of our experience can recover, provided he does not close his mind to all spiritual concepts. He can only be defeated by an attitude of intolerance or belligerent denial." ~Alcoholics Anonymous 1st Edition page 2 of Appendix II c- Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, INC. |

Today it's taken for granted that many alcoholics can recover. It's important to keep in mind that when this was written nothing was working for alcoholics. They were generally considered hopeless cases by the medical profession, and organized religion had no better success rate. There were less than 100 people in AA at that time. These few lines express the essence of what worked for them and why. One of my favorite BB quotes. Its essence is a message of hope.

My point is writing out these BB Quotes each day as a service to anyone who chooses to read them. I was told over 8 years ago when I stuck around AA for hopefully the last time "keep what you want and leave the rest." If it applies great if not keep searching for something that does. So I pray if this does not apply to you you keep on searching.
