Big Book Quote
"The fact is that most alcoholics, for reasons yet obscure, have lost the power of choice in drink. Our so-called will power becomes practically nonexistent. We are unable, at certain times, to bring into our consciousness with sufficient force the memory of the suffering and humiliation of even a week or a month ago. We are without defense against the first drink."

Or even if we are able to bring into consciousness the memory...it doesn't stop us from drinking.
Knowing all of the past troubles I had never kept me from drinking because I wanted to change the way I felt in that moment.
The only thing that matters before I drink is that drive to change the way I feel.

Ah yes. The part of alcoholism that really screws us. That strange mental blank spot. Screwed me everytime.
This is why I worry about the folks who say that fear keeps them sober. Seems like a shaky foundation to me.

A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, 'darkness' on the walls of his cell.
