Awesome. Few things are more rewarding than carrying the message to places such as these. Take your Higher Power with you. Its like giving your first lead. Youll be nervous right up until you start and then youll find that your Higher Power takes over from there. God bless ya!

You will likely see some tough kids tonight! You will likely have a mixed group, that is, a few withdrawn and some who will want to see what they can get away with. You may want to establish some ground rules, like … if you’re disruptive you cannot stay and spoil the discussion for others. In all likelihood however you are going to have people with more experience there along with you, and also also someone who knows the adolescents, so don’t worry too much. They will handle problems if they come up. Remember that this group, by and large, is a very selfish group of individuals. Find the need and offer them each something. That’s the way to make progress. Establish your credibility by letting them know your own alcohol use got out of control (they don’t want to hear anything from a saint). If you had a troubled adolescence…. all the better. Don’t try to be a “friend”, but rather a resource. Above all else…. be yourself. They can spot a phony a mile away. This is an extremely challenging, yet by the same token, extremely rewarding group to work with. You'll be fine.

it was great, actually! i was thankful i had some 'oldtimers' with me, who really helped calm me down. i think i rambled a bit, but by and large the kids listened pretty well. i'm excited to do more of this type of thing |
