The chanters. People who chant the end of things like... "C. That God could and would if He were sought." and they chant... "Principles before personalities" and they chant... "and the wisdom to know the difference... come on wisdom!" and they chant... "it works if you work it... work work work." I hate when they ask if there's anybody for their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd meeting and there is so somebody suggests that the topic is Step 1. So they never get beyond step 1. I hate meetings about Gratitude. Or people who are experts about what God's will is for other people. I hate when the chair person says, "Does anyone have a topic?" Chair the effing meeting! I hate when someone says, "I never share so..." and they share for over 8 minutes. I hate when someone has to start blabbing just to bust up a nice moment of silence. I hate meetings where they pass the basket around during introductions. I hate when someone has a birthday so everybody talks about how wonderful this birthday person is. In my group, you get to chair the meeting and you get cake, but we talk about A.A. and the recovery from it, not about you. Hope that makes sense.

You know, there's enough bickering and negativity in this forum already without starting a thread with the soul purpose of griping and moaning about AA. I mean, really, don't you ever get tired of b!tching? What a downer. I'm fortunate that I found AA apart from this forum because if I were a newcomer, someone who wanted to try AA, or just looking for a solution to my drinking problem, and if this forum was my first impression of AA--all the bickering, negativity, and unhappiness--well, I can't say I'd want what some of you have, that's for sure. If you happen to be new to AA and reading this thread--this is NOT what recovery is about. There's much joy to be found in the program, in the fellowship, and in service. I, for one, have an amazing life--a life I never believed was possible. I have AA to thank for that life.

With all due respect this is exactly what recovery is like. Granted I don't feel well tonight and I am keeping that in mind that I probably don't need to be on the forum but recovery is not rosey and calm and wonderful. It is hard work. It is heading off differences with people, relationships, and differences of opinion within AA and within different step groups, and within what rehab treatment centers teach ( they love the chanting) which btw doesn't bother me but this is what you're going to find and it's not bad, just is an honest interpretation of what it is like.

I'm sorry your recovery is like that, but mine really is not. It's not a war where I'm constantly fighting everyone and everything. Sort of the opposite, actually. Maybe I'm just easily amused. I go to work, meetings, spend time with family, and at night I like a nice hot cup of tea and a good book. Rosy, calm, and wonderful--that kind of sounds like happy, joyous, and free.

Cublie knows exactly what I mean and it's related to all the hoops for heath care folks. Recovery though is not sitting on your butt it usually is peaceful at times but so many people in recovery have a different opinion about how it should be done. Just on SR you see how many differing opinions there are. Not to say we aren't generally a happy bunch but sometimes it's just hard.

All this negativity is not only hurting the newbies to recovery but also the ones who claim recovery is primary. Take the thorns with the roses or don't but please don't be so b*tchy about your little irritations. To some all this "whining and showing up late" shows people that at least the tardy person has made an effort. So what you consider to be annoying consider it in your head only.

If my spiritual condition is bad: almost everything If I'm in fit spiritual condition: almost nothing I love pointing out the Dr Addict Alcoholic story where he whinges about meetings to the back to basics people who start whining about "The Good Old Days" You mean they had meetings that sucked back then too? in the Holy Era? oh yeah, drunkalogues, late starts, smoky meetings etc God I love AA, I really do I was at a meeting, I don't know, a few years ago maybe, where we had JUST read about the "oldtimer" who moves to a new area and "views with alarm for the good of AA" and how surprised he is when everyone laughs at him (written like 60 years ago I might add, Bleeding deacons not being a new phenomenon) and this guy who has lived in the area for over 25 years starts whinging about how bad AA was in our area and how much better they did it in Texas and how we would do well to emulate them and so on and so on, and how utterly offended he got when everyone in the room eventually started roaring with laughter. Seemed to work for him for 25 years, he mentioned he didn't do service work or take commitments because it was too frustrating because everyone did everything wrong anyway. I had Fooking tears rolling I was laughing so hard, I mean we had JUST READ that paragraph then off he goes on a 20 minute rant. AA is awesome, so pet peeve or high comedy is just a state of mind.

Y'all can just go to an alanon meeting if you don't like this thread. Keep coming back. Don't leave before the miracle. think THINK think Easy Does It Live and Let Live. That's all a bunch of Alanon stuff. Some people are decent human beings when they are sober and become animals when they drink. Dr Bob was an example. But some are almost an equally tortured mess drunk or sober... like Bill W. Some of us have a problem which centers in our mind... not our thinking... and we are disconnected from God without the Program of Action which the A.A. Program offers and we cannot just get by on the fluffy and happy fellowship. We have what you might call an uncurable agnosticism and what I believe to be a sickened soul. When I drank booze, it was to me... a spiritual solution. Now I need a sufficient substitute. I'd at least like to hear the solution as outlined in the steps once in a while... to hear your current experience in them once in a while would be nice. Fuzzy bunny tails and sugar will not get me sober. You maybe. Hearing chants and A.A. slogans don't cut it for some of us. And here's another thing; chair people who share about 5 or six times during the hour and has the audacity to tell others to limit their shares to 5 minutes. ![]() People who say that God keeps them sober , but don't think for a minute that maybe that will work for everybody in the room. Some of us have to do just a little bit of work to access this Power, otherwise the Big Book would be a one page pamphlet; God Keeps thou Sober! Have a Good Day! Oh, and meetings that have cake more than 4 times a week! This is not disruptive at all!People who get up during the meeting to use the can, go outside and smoke, etc. If you're going to go to a meeting go to a meeting. Use the can before or after the meeting. How rude can you be?

I appreciate this thread because it's nearly impossible to be up and sunny 100% of the time. Whether you're an old goat, or a new goat in recovery you are gonna have good and bad days-- just like before recovery and before addictions got ingrained. I need to get crap off my chest when I feel bad which is not an indication of a bad spirtual program, it's using your tools. IF recovery only wants me when I can be up and feeling great but not when I feel bad then I am doomed. Thanks mcgow for making me feel better and for AGO and his funny stories. I am cranky pants I know it and I'll be better soon when I get over this flu thing...... I do love you people. |
