*~*~*~*~*^Daily Reflections^*~*~*~*~* ONE DAY AT A TIME Above all, take it one day at a time. AS BILL SEES IT, p.11 Why do I kid myself that I must stay away from a drink for only one day, when I know perfectly well I must never drink again as long as I live? I am not kidding myself because one day at a time is probably the only way I can reach the long-range objective of staying sober. If I determine that I shall never drink again as long as I live, I set myself up. How can I be sure I won't drink when I have no idea what the future may hold? On a day-at-a-time basis, I am confident I can stay away from a drink for one day. So I set out with confidence. At the end of the day, I have the reward of achievement. Achievement feels good and that makes me want more! Copyright 1990 ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS WORLD SERVICES, INC.

Another example of why "The Daily Afflictions" is quite reflective of the mindset of most of contemporary AA. Sell the newcomer short by offering him mere sobriety. To quote Bill Wilson, or I should say to quote Lois quoting Bill in her book "Lois Remembers": 'We don't stay away from a drink, we grow away from a drink...' I have never been able to stay away from a drink and if I could I wouldn't need God. If all AA was about was staying away from a drink by sitting in meetings, hiding out from my disease that's out there doing pushups, I'd shoot myself. Thank God that I encountered a man who offered me more than just meetings and staying away from a drink. I was offered a way of life and permanent recovery. In fact I was asked if I was ready to give up liquor for good and for all and was told that I would never have to drink again. This deal is about living one-day-at-a-time, not not drinking one-day-at-a-time. That isn't setting myself up, that's the truth. That statement "setting myself up" just reinforces the mindset so prevelant in the fellowship.Another one of the self-defeating platitudes that are are so common. Another statement of of the denial of the power of God. This is about freedom and being powerfully recovered, not living in fear. Jim

This has helped me in many ways beginning to live sober and continuing to live sober for 20 years now. If I would have had to think about living the way I was forever why would I want stay sober forever. ![]() I went to AA every day for one year one day at a time & I did what was suggested to help me stay sober...work the steps...get a sponsor...& keep my ears open & mouth shut unless I had a burning desire to add to the topic for the meeting. ![]() For me I used the Serenity Prayer many times a day after I learned how I could apply it to my daily life. I still use it to this day & it is such a freedom to be sober and be able to do what I want to do without the thought of drinking interfering with any activity or job. ![]() kelsh

Hmm.... While my mind was clearing ..I found "One Day At A Time" was something concrete I could attain. It gave me confidence and certainly did me no harm.
