Thank you

There was a post here in the last few weeks regarding folks who were drunk at meetings. I'd just like to thank you all for that thread, because I think it helped me immensely tonight.

I woman came in to the meeting tonight and she smelled like booze. Sat next to me. Now, when this has happened before, I've stayed away from someone who was drunk at a meeting because I was reacting with my defects of judgment and fear.

Tonight I welcomed her. Then after the meeting I spoke with her and offered her my number, and offered to give her a ride in the future. I really hope that she takes me up on it.

Anyway, if I hadn't read that post here and read all the responses and reading the ESH of others who have been in that situation, I never would've reached out to that woman. And I feel good.

So, thanks.

xo

Karen

When I see a drunk in or out of the rooms I always now think to myself.... there go I but for the Grace of God and of course the love of a group of sober alcoholics.

I could be very wrong about what I am going to say, if I am please let me know.

But the one thing that I see that sets AA apart from all other programs is AA seeing the importance of helping a still suffering alcoholic to maintain our own sobriety.

Well, guess what?? That lady called me tonight! Said she was going back in forth on whether or not she was an alcoholic and has come to the conclusion that she is!

We'll be going to the Thursday night meeting together. :-)

How odd....and timely for me too Karen!..

At our noon meeting...a woman was just back from a
short period of drinking. I noticed her Sat. ..did not
know she had been out. Nor did I smell alcohol.

So I go up and said " Hi how have you been?"
thinking no more about her prescense

Today she shared...said because no one had shunned
her Sat. she was back and ready to begin again.
She asked for womens phne numbers this time!

Karen that is cool, we hold out the hand of AA, if and when a person is ready to take it is not in our control, all we have control of is our willingness to put our hand out to help.

Carol there is an old timer in my area that has been giving out chips at this one meeting for years and part of what he says is for the retreads:

Quote:
The doors of AA swing both ways..... You can come in and stay as long as you like, you can go out and stay as long as you can, but when you come back we will not say "I told you so!", we will say "Welcome! We are glad to have you!"

Where better for the Alcoholic to come than to a meeting? I truly enjoy seeing those who have drank coming to meetings; they are making more effort than some who are dry and coming. This thing called recovery is not a game, though denial would like to make it so.

Karen, you filled me with joy this morning to hear your experience. Please tell us more of your work with this new person as it unfolds. Good stuff!
