Smile The Little Red Book (Hazelden)

Anyone used/read this book in their recovery?

Anyone suggest any other reading (as well as the big book)

TIA

I use the Little Red Book for stepwork, it explains the 12 Steps in a simple and concise manner.

Just about everything that Hazelden publishes is worth reading IMO. I've never felt like I've learned our read too much about my addictions.

How about some daily meditation books? Daily Reflections, 24 Hours A Day, Keep It Simple, etc?

It is also called "Stools and Bottles". It is a small book the same size as the Little Red Book.

Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions; Bill Wilson wanted the fellowship to grasp the Tradition and they were vehemently against more rules, so he wrote short narratives on the Steps to get them to at least read the book. Be careful, the 12/12 is not the Basic Text of Recovery, which is the Big Book. Some would try to work a planned program of recovery from the 12/12 and it simply will not work. The 12/12 is a compliment only in regard to Step work, while in the Traditions it gives the basis for our fellowship in detail.

I have found that to be true as well Rufus, the 12 steps in the 12X12 are simply as you say a compliment to the steps in the BB.

I like to read The One Day At A Time book everyday right before I pray. Each day it helps me get into meditation and brings a good topic to pray about.

My prayers can get repetitive, and the book keeps thinking.

I have a pocket addition of the Good Book by Gideon. It's not Hazelden but it does have a few good idea's on how to live sober.

The Big Book is the step book I use, everything else is something to accompany that book. I also like the Little Red Book, the 12 and 12, the spiritual exercises of St Ignatius, Sermon on the Mount by Emmet Fox, I was a Pagan by V.C. Kitchen, What is the Oxford Group ( great read, the AA program before there was AA, a must read for the AA historian or anyone who wants to learn more about spiritual principles)

I bought "A 12-step Approach to the Spiritual Exercises of St.Ignatius" for a freind and she found it useful. Not being a christian I tend to shy way from christain based texts. Some might see that as 'contempt prior to investigation'. Don't think thats how it is for me. Just my experiance of the negaitivity of Christain dogma

I know it was my own 'closed mind' that kept me away from AA after my 1st meeting at 27 (54 now!) when I heard 'white middle american christain bible bashing' Shame, but it was my journey. I now try and live by the Quaker principle of "be open to new light, wherever it may come from"

As for the other books, if you've still got a copy of "I was apagan", hold on to it. Its quoted as as much as £650 in the UK on Amazon!

Take care

Don't get me wrong steve, whatever gets you sober and or leads to you your god (I use god rather than higher power) is to be celebrated not condemd.

When i was sent to AA at 27 by my (at the time) local psychiatric hospital, I was not long enough way from my last drink to 'hear' what was being sent. Neither did i want to stop drinking. I needed to 'do something about my drinking'. It was only when I came back in to AA, a little over 4 years ago now, that I wanted what AA offerd.

Our men's workshop group 'The Band' is starting a 12 step workshop using The Little Red Book on January 14. We'll read for 20 minutes or so, then discuss. Usually about 20 guys start, generally 12-15 make it through our entire workshop. Make sure to have your other AA books handy as the *asterisks refer you to read those portions frequently.

I read "The Eye Opener" every morning along with "Twenty Four Hours a Day". I like "As Bill Sees It for quick guidance, the BB, 12 &12, Little Red Book (you can get the workbook that goes along with it, step study) and "Stools and Bottles" (great study of deadly character defects).

For the past several years I have attended an annual Step Study where we use four books. We use the Big Book, 12 & 12, Stools and Bottles, and The Little Red Book. Early on, while doing my Steps for the first time, I noticed that a couple of Steps didn't have very much information to go on using only the Big Book. (Call me a simpleton if you wish, but I really need more than a couple of sentences or paragraphs to get me headed in the right direction, if you know what I mean.) With my sponsor's help, I was introduced to the 12 & 12 which was a lifesaver and then I found The Little Red Book and Stools and Bottles while participating in this particular Step Study.

I feel that this journey in sobriety of ours has a beginning and it has no end. we can take it as far as we want. There are many tools out there that can aide us on our journey and we should utilize them if we can.

The last time I heard....both the Little Red Book
and it's companion...The Little Green Book were no
longer being offered by Hazelton.

I don't know if they are now back on the publishers list
The Hazelton. Bookstore would know..I think.

Maybe a SR member could look at current information?
...Please share on this thread if you do.

Hazelden -- Addiction treatment, publishing, education, research, and recovery support

Looks like Little Red Book and Stools and Bottles (is that the Little Green Book?) are still available ....
