| Combating Alcoholism
"In our belief any scheme of combating alcoholism which proposes to shield the sick man from temptation is doomed to failure. If the alcoholic tries to shield himself he may succeed for a time, but he usually winds up with a bigger explosion than ever. We have tried these methods. These attempts to do the impossible have always failed."

The program suggested in the BB is not a self-help program. Rather, it is a God help program. We learn to rely upon God to solve our problems by applying the spiritual principles contained in the twelve steps. Taking these steps will help us to find a Power greater than ourselves if we are willing to seek in earnest. Without this Power greater than ourselves and the application of the spiritual principles we have no defense against the first drink. To shield the alcoholic from alcohol serves no positive purpose, it does not address the true problem; How to live in this world being alcoholic without having to drink. Eventually, every person has to get into the real world. We therefor have to have a defense when the opportunity for a drink presents itself. So the shielding is not a solution. Thanks for the topic Rufus.
