Having some Moxie

I remember a time when the phrase, “having some moxie" was one of the finest compliments you could be paid. Having moxie meant that you had some real guts, a don't give up attitude. Of course if you changed the verb, you might want to get on the stick quickly because no one likes to think of themselves as gutless.

Tiger Woods personifies this phrase for me today. In short, the finest golfer in the world today and possibility in the history of the game has played for almost a year with a completely torn ACL and has several stress fractures of his left tibia. With all of this, Tiger won the most challenging golf event of the PGA, USGA season, the US Open; he never complained once.

From the Urban Legend Dictionary;

Moxie

MOCKS-ee, n.

Having moxie means having enough cleverness, skill, creativity, fortitude and cajones to solve (or, at least, to get out of) a difficult and personally threatening situation.

Otherwise known as guts…

I am proud of this man of Tiger’s sport accomplishments as an American, yet I prouder still of this his humility, courage and resolve to see through to his goals and realize his dreams. This man has some moxie!

..and here I thought courage was out of style.

Talk about a remember when ..

In my first month of sobriety, I went for coffee with a 13th stepper (I didn't know it at the time! He was trying to be 'helpful') and he told me I had 'moxie' which was a load of shite because he had only just met me.
Two days later, he tracked me down at my place of employment - that's when I knew he was a predator. I told him off!
Yup! I got moxie alright!

good insite, but i have to say that playing all year with a torn ACLU might NOT be the wisest decision...seems like we need to take care of our selves and our boddies to make it over the long haul instead of getting the glory now.

not to be a bummmer

Never heard of moxie myself - interesting word. I had a DVR HD cable box that was called a MOXI - but that was a Motorola product.

Yeah - Tiger played well, all things considered. Being one who is familiar with sports injuries - if the ACL is torn (I didn't realize he has a complete tear) - there isn't much that can be done about it without being laid up for a few months. Usually they take part of the other knee's ACL or you can opt for a slightly used one from a cadaver....

Myself- I have a torn rotator cuff and pretty much need full reconstructive surgery if I ever expect to avoid dislocating my should on a regular basis - but, I am not doing any more damage by not getting the procedure done (I was told 10 years ago that eventually it's gonna have to happen) - So I made a choice, do I lay myself out for 6 months for surgery and recovery? Or put it off until I am less active?

For now - staying active, deal with a little physical pain now and again...

Good point. Those who go beyond, usually do risk much and at some expense.

Listening to NPR the other morning, I listened as a Medal of Honor ceremony was taking place for a heroic US Army soldier serving in Iraq who threw his body onto a grenade that was thrown into his armored vehicle by an extremist. This soldier had but a millisecond to make a decision and then to take action to save others at the cost of his own life. This is heroic courage and I am saddened by the loss, but I am grateful I am living a new life today and can both recognize the valor of others and have the ability to apply the lessons learned in my daily walk.

Yes, we should take care of ourselves, yet I believe that through this gift of a new life, I need to be ready to go beyond when called on. What is beyond? Answering the phone in the middle of the night, dipping into my pocket for another, doing what I responsibly can for another sick and suffering Alcoholic.
