I want to start attending AA and wish to get a sponser. I understand that I can just go to a meeting, I have done that before, but how do I get a sponser right away. I am a little bit hard to get to know and I am afraid finding a sponser wont be easy for me. Toomutch

Here is a link that you might find useful. It is about AA and sponsorship. http://aa.org/en_pdfs/p-15_Q&AonSpon.pdf Welcome to AA. If you would like to get started learning more about the Big Book and/or the Steps a great place to start is right here at our forum under our 12 step support step study section. Here is a link to that area http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/step-study/ The Steps are on the top of the forum and the chapters of the Big Book as well as other discussion posts are located below the steps.

Nandm, Thank you for the information, it will be helpful I'm sure. Off the subject, I have a beagle that looks almost identical to yours. Her name is Tannah.

If I moved and had to find a new home group and sponsor I would start with this link Alcoholics Anonymous : How To Find An A.A. Meeting I would look for a closed Big Book step study meeting or a literature based meeting. The folks there as a general rule have a good understanding of what we are dealing with as alcoholics and what the solution is. They are more than willing to help you on your journey. The last place in the world I would go would be an open discussion meeting. There is a lot of support here, but it is not the same as sitting across the table with a Big Book on it talking eye to eye. I have friends here that know folks in the Colorado area, they may be able to help you as well, I will PM them.

So true. Our Tannah lives to eat, love and bark, and you're right about the eyes, she looks as if she has on permanant eye liner and knows shes a cutie.

I'm probably going to get some feedback for this but I believe that Newcomers should get a few "Feelout" meetings behind them before making a decision about a Sponsor. I see a lot of Newcomers come to meetings only to ba accosted by what I call Vultures after the meeting. They spend a lot of time hovering over the Newcomer in a flock, telling the Newcomer everything they need to know, what to do and how to do it. A lot of them do it for an Ego Boost and nothing more. These people tend to scare away a lot of folks who are on the fence or at the ready point to make a decision. Personally they scare me too. I say that you take a few weeks to determine the demeanor of the people in the meetings before you make a decision. That's just my opinion and in no way should be taken as fact. |
