That's why the maintenance part of the Steps is so important to me. I get sicker, quicker from the spiritual side of my Program than the other two. This being the case I must put more of my effort into reinforcing that part of my Program.

I think this is my most favorite quote from the big book. It is such a simple statement but it is the crux of our disease, the 'built in forgetter' we have that doesn't allow us to bring into consciousness the awful consequences of people like us taking the first drink. I think with me the lack of mental defense comes from having something eating me up inside that is subconscious...and the steps help me face what it is and bring it out into the light of day so I don't have to medicate.
