I'm in favour and without wanting to pre-empt the team it is probably simply because its existence and manner of running haven't been specifically endorsed by any AA body, so we are on a par with the Big Book Study events and videos for example. Or people who organise dances for AA members?

It's a copywrite issue .. To prevent legal problems that may arise the owners of SR took action and we had a name change. We will still be sharing our AA ES&H as usual. "A rose is a rose is a rose by any other name still smells as sweet" G. Stein

Ever enjoyed the Big Book Study videos with Joe McQ or gone to one of their weekends? Some local AA members organise a dance for AA members and their families. It is not conference approved so is not called AA. It's great fun! | |

I am aware of the traditions. I have been to big book studies and I have been to see Joe & Charlie. AA Conferences don't use the AA name because they are breaking traditions by charging for the conferences and I understand the necessity to do this. They couldn't be sure a 7th tradition basket would cover their expenses. However ironically many/most conferences get the money to front these conferences from their local intergroup, who in turn get the money from AA groups, who get the money from the 7th tradition, but that is another argument. Perhaps I articulated myself poorly. This forum was the Alcoholics Anonymous forum for some time and I am assuming the forum leaders were aware of the traditions during that time. As this isn't an official AA forum, they are not bound by them. Did AA or their legal representatives contact the forum and ask or suggest that this forum change its name? Were there legal consequences implied if the board's owners didn't make those changes? |

We received some complaints from members on another thread about the NA name being used here. Al-anon forced us to change the name of our al-anon forum a couple of years ago. We were not contacted by representatives on the other name changes, but the owners thought they should change the names because they are trademarked names in the US Patent and Trademark office.
