I used to grab a pillow and curl up in a ball and just let the emotions come. I used to try and sit and look back at the memories and let them come back up in little pieces.
The first were the hardest. The terror I felt when remembering was very hard. It helped to tell myself that the fear was a child's fear and as an adult I could handle it. I lived through it when it happened. I could live through remembering.
Counseling and support are very important. I was fortunate. I didn't have ongoing flashbacks. I just had the memory come up completely and then I was done with it.
My daughter also has PTSD and her flashbacks were like yours are. She went to counseling and group therapy and had it managed in about a year.
It's really hard, but you'll get through it. There is always someone here if you need to talk.
Big hugs,
MG
