Chy,

If you can’t get to your sponsor, then work with another alcoholic. Make this an opportunity to do good by an uncomfortable experience. What you can use is the feelings that you had because of the dream. Draw on those feelings to help you be empathetic to someone who is in the actual throws of what you dreamed. It’s like a refresher course without having the totally devastating repercussions.

When this happens to me, I sit quietly and review the past few days. What has got me upset enough to bring out this reminder? Have I been slacking on my conscious contact with my Higher Power? (I feel my alcoholic malady is three fold… physical, mental and spiritual. Today, I get sicker quicker from the spiritual side of my program than the other two.) Am I practicing the principles in all my affairs? Skimping on my steps? Is there one (or two) that need attention? Am I remembering to work Step One 100% today? Or am I losing sight of the fact my life is still unmanageable by me? Have I been working with others or have I been isolating again?

It usually only takes a few minutes of quiet reflection to gain the insight that I am needing. If it remains a problem, I throw myself even the harder into working with others. (The book says that’s one way to help insure my sobriety and I find that I usually say to others that which I need to hear for myself.)

Hope this helps. I hate to see anyone go through this, but if we can take away some of the mystery of why it happens, then it’s not so frightening. Let us know how it goes because it could help others going through the same thing.
