Flashbacks 'caused' by LSD use are often not the direct result of the active chemical, but a linked to memories or feeling that gets triggered; much like when a person smells popcorn and thinks of the movie theatre. Flashbacks can happen for a variety of things, not just because of the LSD, though that is the most common assumption.
Studies in regard to LSD are contraversial, and have mixed results at best. There is a renewed interest in using LSD in a number of research studies ranging from treating PTSD to anxiety disorders to schizophrenia. Some major universities (ex. Harvard) are now exploring research related to LSD use.

I do not support any use/abuse of illegal drugs, but I have read about a dozen clinical studies involving LSD, and I can see some benefits of using it in controlled environment and under the supervision of a medical professional.
