I'm sorry Nina but I can't imagine what you're after here. There are no singular 'principles' behind the Steps in any of the literature I know of: the Steps demonstrate their principles themselves. And there's surely more than one per Step. For example, the First Step - "We admitted we were powerless over drugs/alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable" - draws on numerous "principles": that healing can come from honesty, openness, humility, willingness to see and face the truth about ourselves. These are the principles which underlie all of the Steps, really. The best way of learning this is to DO the Steps. Which I'd warmly suggest that you try - with the help of a sponsor and of the abundant literature that 12 step programs make available.
good luck.
best -
Guy
