just asking sounds like a good idea and so do the "just friend idea". why try to figure it out ahead of time, why not just go with the flow. maybe by the time the date is over, you'll have a better idea of whats it all about.

try not to feel too bad about not paying, she invited you. sometimes if we do the inviting, then we really expect to do the paying. it maybe something she just want to do, if not, you'll probably know that too by the end of lunch. sorry about the loss of your father.
