Just from my experiences: diagnoses are often made preliminary without the doctor knowing all of the patient's story. I personally was diagnosed with bipolar, depression with psychotic features, schizophrenia, insomnia, and anxiety/panic disorder.
Today, I just have depression and am on an SSRI to help me which works well most of the time. But, in the end, I am an alcoholic as well. Which, in my humble opinion, is the root of all my troubles.
