Preta is correct in the function of a sponsor. The most I would ever suggest to a guy I'm working with in early recovery is that they not let a relationship sidetrack the recovery work.
I find many helpful suggestions (spiritual directions) contained in the To Wives chapter of AA's Big Book. It may give you some ideas on spiritually sound ways of interacting with an alcoholic, so that you keep your sanity in this process.
