| Buspar was developed by Bristol-Myers in the 1980s; they were hoping that it would become a breakthrough novel anti psychotic, but it failed miserably during clinical trials. In fact, in some instances, it made certain forms of schizophrenia worse.
Having spent millions of dollars in its development, BM grasped at straws and found that the drug was somewhat useful in treating anxiety, so they decided to market it as a non-benzo anti-anxiety agent instead.
I've never taken it myself. The background of the drug makes me suspicious, and it really highlights what drug manufacturers are *really* after. However, it seems to work quite well for some people. You need to take if for several weeks to determine if it's going to work at all; several studies show that buspirone is pretty ineffective for people who have taken benzos in the past.
Hope this helps |
