The Big Book also states that will power is fine as far as it goes. Alcoholics have all the will power in the world except when it comes to taking that next drink. The sayings I hear in AA meetings such as the ones you quoted, are very credible and mean just what they say. I could not want to drink with all the will power I had but until I "changed" from doing it my way, to doing it the AA way involving my Higher Power, nothing happened. It all boils down to wanting to drink more than doing what it takes to not drink. That's what's meant about "not wanting to quit bad enough." It's an observation made concerning a person who still wants to do it his way. Until I completely surrendered my way, to the AA way and asking God for help, I was helpless. Not hopeless!
