Wouldn't it be wonderful if we had a world where everybody said, 'We don't know?' The fact is that you're surrounded by God and you don't see God, because you KNOW ABOUT God. I think they underline the "understand" part just to emphasise that they are not telling you how to think of God it is YOUR conception that is important....even though ultimately we cannot possibly conceive God.
