Pain is _not_ a living thing. Pain is a chemical reaction in the body that is useful to tell us that it's time to go find a doctor. It's no different than watching sugar disolve in water, there is no emotion, no intention, no desire.
Addiction is a whole different thing. That is something that happens inside of our minds and souls. That is the one that can take on our emotions and intentions.

The easy way is to _prevent_ that from happening in the first place. I keep in continuous contact with my 12 step recovery program to insure that the addiction _never_ comes back. I practice _daily_ prevention.
I also follow my docs instructions exactly as written. I have asked them tons of questions and I understand _exactly_ how all these meds work in my body. I also am a member of another support program, not 12 step, for my medical condition.
No matter how bad my future may be, I need only pick up the phone to find people that understand what I am going thru and that can help me survive and overcome. That's what I do for my own "prevention"
Mike
