I use Ativan periodically for my generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). For the most part I go without it unless the anxiety becomes intense and severely disrupts my functioning. Also I use stress and anxiety reduction techniques that lessen the effects of my GAD (
here's a link). I also have my girlfriend to help me by monitoring my Ativan use because it has a high potential for abuse and dependence.
