I didn't read the entire article, skimmed it...
Though I've always held the following beliefs:
AA was founded by a bunch of white, christian, males. Even though the program allows for a higher power of your own conception, the original idea was centered around christianity. In all the meetings in my area of which I have attended, they all close with the lord's prayer. I personally don't like it. Not that it bothers me in contrast to my own faith, but I do believe it's exclusionary.
In general there is an anti-alternative lifestyle sentiment out there (in the US anyway). It makes sense that this would transmit to the AA/recovery community as well. I don't think there are hardly any groups/organizations with similar populations where this doesn't happen.
