I am a long term yo-yo-er on weight! I use to keep 3 or 4 "sets" of clothes around....tiny, small, med, and large!
following the general guides (not too harshly) of the diabetic diet has helped me. I find that eating less more often is very helpful.
I also struggle to not eat obvious sweets. Sugary stuff tends to set up a craving of sorts in me as well as alot of emotional ups and downs.
My eating seems to have less to do with comforting myself than with punishing myself...but I have only just began to look at this issue..so don't get it yet.
