I took Valerian root for awhile. It mainly relaxed me and helped me sleep (vivid dreams) and my doctor said there was little downside (re-side effects) to it. I never tried Kava-Kava.
I didn't come off of my anti-depressants until I learned coping skills in a cognitive behavioral therapy group. That would have scared me to death not to have any thing to fall back on while coming off of them.
