the above article is know by many AA`s as the "Myth Article"
Of alcoholics who came A.A. and really tried, 50% got sober at once and remained that way; 25% sobered up after some relapses, and among the remainder, those who stayed on with A.A. showed improvement. Other thousands came to a few meetings and at first decided they didn’t want the program [In the Foreword to Alcoholics Anonymous, 2d ed., p. xx].This comes from the second edition, which is not copyrighted in the USA if I am not mistaken.
it plainly states,
of those who really tryed, now that is what I am talking about.I have never known anyone who got drunk while taking the steps as they are laid out in our big book.I know a bunch who got drunk while attending meetings and not taking the steps.
There is a old grapevine article in the archives where a group kept up with the rates, and they showed a documented 93% success rate..
one problem we have today is people just show up and we never know why. They have many reasons for coming to a meeting. To get a wife/husband back, get the boss/judge off their back..
looking for companionship,sex,victims,etc,you name it
Dick B address this in a nice article, which is copyrighted,or I would post it here.
here is the link if anyone wants to read it.
