To expand on Bugs' post, which by the way is great-I like the whole version of the prayer, I forget the exact year, but Ruth Hock , the non-alcoholic secretary in what is now called GSO, saw the prayer in an obituary. She cut it out and saved it and started sending out the version we use along with correspondences to people writing GSO. It spread from there.
