During my stay in rehab in 2004, we were asked to do 'Picture Work'. One person at a time, we were asked to enter a room that had a large circle of black and white photos laid out on the floor. We had to choose a photo that we felt we connected with, then spend 15 minutes writing about the feelings the photo envoked.

I chose a photo of a truck load of refugees, and this is what i wrote.

I connected with this picture of a truck load of refugees because i feel like I am a refugee. They seem so desperate, scared and uncomfortable, hoping and searching for a better life, solutions to their problems. In this picture they look like they have been cast off, the dregs of their society. Unwanted, unheard, incapable of surviving without someones help. When I saw this picture I felt as though I was a refugee from a life of using, cast in a pile of other addicts desperately looking for a way to stop the pain, anguish and trauma, to make a fresh start and have a better healthy life. Although this picture seems so bleak, to me it also signifies hope, courage and determination. There is a chance for all of us to improve our lives. All we have to do is make a decision and take that first step, no matter how scary it may feel.
