| AA and bipolar disorder...a question Hi, I have been reading thru some of the posts on the board and found a link about what to expect at an AA meeting. I attended a meeting a while back but was told by a couple of girls I talked to that it would be best for me to not mention the fact that I have bipolar disorder and take meds or some members may voice opinions that I am not considered fully sober because of being on "mind altering drugs". These were women who offered their phone numbers and I did call them. That just about turned me against AA. After reading the portion in the link about "AA and Psychiatry... The Question of Medications", I was glad to know that it is not any AA literature that states prohibiting taking required prescription medication. I guess the question I do have is when I do get a sponsor am I to not say anything about having bipolar disorder? Self medicating can be a big thing with mental illness, how do I not deal with that part of "me" and still go thru all of the steps? I know there may be some there who do feel that way and they have a right to their opinions. Do those of you with bipolar disorder who attend AA meetings find this to be a problem? If so, how do you handle it? I'd think I'd like to go back, the program seems to be one of the best...I just need to feedback I guess. Thanks!
