Drug Rehab

Whether they are intensive inpatient, retraining or outpatient protocols targeting substance abuse disorders, drug rehab programs have to address certain addictive personality issues like short attention span, impulsivity, and bad decision making. Remediation of cognitive deficits is just one factor of therapy. But one of the most interesting things when you look at drug rehab is how many successful programs rely on the nature of spirituality.

Drug Rehab Programs

Regardless of the range of diverse theoretical or spiritual faiths, it is surprising how many programs rely on a spiritual element. Of course, physiology and psychology play a significant part because drug rehab does not involve magic wands; it does involve science. But it is interesting that in addition to the scientific grounding, spirituality is a strong factor of success in drug rehab programs.

This is probably due to the impact of AA. As a treatment, AA has enjoyed tremendous success in handling mental health and addiction in real life. Part of this is result of the nature of treatment--training the addict not to stand alone but to rely on an extended support system--both the tangible variety and the intangible. In a sense, it is like standing in a crowded elevator. If it is crowded enough, you simply can not fall. You are held upright by those around you.

The analogy is an oversimplification. In real life, there is always some way to fall. But it is true that the stronger the support system, the higher the rate of success. But certainly a key subdivision of the drug rehab process is to train the individual in spiritual therapy to develop a methodology to find some kind of internal sense of peace.
