Drug and Alcohol Treatment

There are hundreds of drug and alcohol treatment programs which are available to help addicts learn to control their self-destructive behavior and fight the cravings brought on by the changes in their chemistry. Some programs are very specific, and designed to help very specific portions of the community, such as adult Christian males, or teenage girls. This is because grouping together individuals with similar problems is actually part of the therapeutic philosophy, as those who are recovering are best able to help those who are just beginning their difficult journey.

Other programs are more integrated, and the therapeutic groups involve more than individuals with identical problems. This philosophy also relies on those who are recovering to help; but it also gives the addict a broader view of the range of destruction. No matter how bad their addiction is, they are likely to find someone in even worse shape, perhaps even someone in recovery from being in worse condition. Programs may or may not be residential facilities, half-way houses, or even outpatient facilities.

The programs usually have different levels built into their protocol, for example, a detox phase; a treatment phase; a training phase; and an on-going follow-up phase. At different times, new aspects of the program are brought in such as medical therapies; physical therapies, social therapies. The goal of bringing together a multi-faceted approach builds the most effective protocol.

The unavoidable truth is that rehabilitation is a life-long process in which the addict constantly applies life-skills he learned at some earlier part of his program. The addict is always guarding against the apparition of relapse, and drug and alcohol treatment programs provide the weapons that can help.
