Drug and Alcohol Treatment

Drug and Alcohol Treatment for Mature Adults

There is a population of those who need drug and alcohol treatment that often goes unnoticed, and that is the people who have developed addictions in midlife or later. These people have made it through to their 40s, 50s, even 70s without abusing drugs or alcohol, but now they need help.

There are a number of reasons why addiction may surface later in life. In their 40s and 50s, many people face a crisis when they realize that it is not likely their lives will change greatly from that point on: “Is that all there is?” Suddenly, their accomplishments seem hollow and the future uninspiring. People at this stage of their lives are generally at the top of their earning power as well, which makes it easier for them to indulge in costly methods of self-medicating their depression.

Retirement is another turning point in life, and one that can lead to substance abuse. Boredom becomes the enemy, and some people fill those empty hours with the temporary pleasure they get from drinking or using drugs. There is also depression resulting from the feeling that one’s useful life is over and that all that remains is death. Additionally, physical ailments can lead to substance abuse for relief from pain.

Vietnam-era vets form a subset of mature adults fighting addictions. These men (and some women) generally have been dealing with their addictions for a long time, rather than coming to them later in life, but they are still fighting the demons of Da Nang and Khe San.

Drug and Alcohol Treatment Can Change Your Life

No matter how old you are or what caused your addiction, you are never too old to seek drug and alcohol treatment. You still have years of potential happiness ahead of you. Get the help you need now, and make the most of the life you have to live.
