Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a prescription drug intended for limited use in treating people with narcolepsy, a sleep disorder. GHB is sold on the street and used illegally as a "club drug" or "rave drug," and has also become known as a "date rape" drug and muscle building drug.
GHB is used with caution, even when prescribed, and can be very dangerous with many side effects, including:
- drowsiness or unconsciousness
- dizziness
- nausea and vomiting
- loss of coordination
- changes in blood pressure
- trouble breathing
- aggressive behavior
- impaired judgement
- hallucinations
- seizures, coma, and sometimes, death
